“A FATHER AND SON; ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD,” is director Lee Grant’s feature doc about the lives and careers of her friends, Hollywood legends, Kirk and Michael Douglas. My score, for chamber orchestra supplemented by mandolin and accordion, draws influences from 1940s American pop music and Italian film music of the 1950s and ’60s. The film deals with issues of regret, humor, love, infidelity and loss.
In this sequence, Kirk Douglas describes meeting his wife while on a film shoot in Paris:
And in this sequence, Michael and his brother discuss the difficulties of living up to their father’s celebrity and expectations:
“TARNATION,” is director Jonathan Caouette’s stunning and controversial documentary which he began filming as a 10 year old child and completed in his 20s. The film documents a tortured family history, and centers upon his mother’s mental illness. My score is for string orchestra, guitars and electronics. The music attempts to convey Jonathan’s tortured but loving relationship with his family. This is the opening sequence:
and here is the edited trailer using my score:
“DAUGHTER OF SUICIDE” is Dempsey Rice’s documentary about her early life and mother’s tragic suicide. In this sequence, her father recalls learning that his estranged wife had died at her own hand. My score, for cello, bass flute and electronics attempts to deal with this immensely intimate issue with restraint but grief.
