“MY BROTHER” is Anthony Lover’s story of two brothers separated as children when their mother, played by Vanessa Williams, dies after an illness. The narrative takes place in the present, when both brothers, James and Isaiah, are grown and Isaiah has mistakenly gotten involved in a criminal conspiracy. Throughout, there are flashbacks to lessons learned from their mother. This score was influenced by my impression of the work of the great Ennio Morricone – not in terms of its melodic and harmonic design, but more, in the relationship which the score maintains to its character. The extended scene presented here is intended to showcase the various emotional facets of the score.
Writing in the NY Times, critic Matt Zoller Seitz wrote: ” ‘My Brother,’ written and directed by Anthony Lover, suffers from organizational problems…But its earnest tone, moving orchestral score (by John Califra) and strong cast (including Vanessa L. Williams, seen in flashbacks as the boys’ fiercely devoted mother) carry it past the rough patches.”
“TRIFLES“ is director Jonathan Donald’s film based on “A Jury of Her Peers,” a 1915 stage play by Susan Glaspell considered to be an example of early feminist writing. The film, produced for PBS, had a wonderful cast, including Jonathan Donald as a menacing and abusive husband along with Obie and Tony Award winning actors Marian Seldes, Maryann Plunkett and Mia Dillon and Victor Garber.
The film tells the story of an abused wife, played by Maryann Plunket, who, deciding she has had enough, devises a diabolically ingenious plan for murdering her husband.
My score – my first for film – was executed with samplers and synthesizers but was scored for chamber ensemble with electronics.
“EASTER EGG ADVENTURE” is an animated feature film written and directed by John Michael Williams based upon his children’s book. The cast includes Eli Wallach, James Woods, Brooke Shields, Joe Pantoliano and Sandra Bernhard. My score was for orchestra and a choir of 20 bass voices (capable a real mayhem that group.
“GHOSTLIGHT“ is Christopher Herrmann’s homage to choreographer, Martha Graham – played in the film by cross-dresser Richard Move. Yet, the film also feature the Martha Graham company – and gave me the opportunity to post-score the troupe as the moved through Graham’s gorgeous technical exercises and classic choreography:
“ELMO’S CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN” was a primetime ABC holiday special starring Ben Stiller, Jaime Foxx, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Hudson and Kevin James.
